Scotch Magic Tape Art Deco Tutorial, Step 1 Prep

Step 1: Prep your nails

STEP 1: Cut some strips of tape in varying widths, about 1mm, 2mm and 3mm as well as a few little triangles. Make sure your nails are clean and dry, then apply a base coat and leave to dry. Base coats give manicures extra longevity and protect your nails against possible staining.

Scotch Magic Tape Art Deco Tutorial, Step 2 Gold Base

Step 2: A gold base

STEP 2: Apply a coat of gold polish (or two depending on opacity) and leave to dry.

Scotch Magic Tape Art Deco Tutorial, Step 3 Mask the ring fingernail

Step 3: Mask the ring fingernail

STEP 3: Mask the skin around the nail on your ring finer. This will make clean up easier!

Scotch Magic Tape Art Deco Tutorial, Step 4 Get a make up sponge

Step 4: Get a make up sponge

STEP 4: Get a disposable make up sponge, any shape with a flat edge will work, but the triangular shapes are easy to hold.

Scotch Magic Tape Art Deco Tutorial, Step 5 Paint the sponge

Step 5: Paint the sponge

STEP 5: Paint the sponge with silver one one half, and gold on the other.

Scotch Magic Tape Art Deco Tutorial, Step 6 Sponge the paint onto the nail

Step 6: Sponge the paint onto the nail.

STEP 6: Sponge the paint on to the ring finger. Move the sponge up and down the nail a small amount so that the two colours blend nicely.

Scotch Magic Tape Art Deco Tutorial, Step 7

Step 7: Create your design

STEP 7: When the polish has been left to dry, place strips of Scotch Magic Tape onto the nail in your desired design. Make sure they make full contact, but don’t press too hard.

Scotch Magic Tape Art Deco Tutorial, Step 8 Paint black polish over the tape

Step 8: Black polish

STEP 8: Paint over the tape with black polish, then carefully and slowly remove the pieces of tape, a tweezer can help.

TOP TIP: It can help to draw your design out first. You can also number the lines of tape so that you can take them off in reverse order.

Repeat steps 6 and 7 for each nail.

Scotch Magic Tape Art Deco Tutorial, Step 9 Paint black polish over the tape

Step 9: Black polish

STEP 9: Clean up with an angled brush dipped in remover or acetone, and apply a top coat when the black polish is touch dry – apply ing a top coat too soon can cause the black polish to smudge.
