OPI Color Paints Swatch & Review

If you follow me on Instagram you might have seen that I posted a bottle shot of the OPI Color Paints (ugh it kills me to drop the U out) and I was really excited about these. Color Paints is a set of 8 jelly colours with a silver ‘canvas’ base. If I’m honest, I’ve not been excited about non-vintage polish of late. There have been some nice polishes, but nothing that has made me feel genuinely keen to pull out the nail art supplies and have a play. I’m so glad that this collection met my expectations; they’re incredibly fun to use and I’ve still got things in my head that I want to try that I didn’t get time to do for this post. So, on to the swatches…

Of the first four colours, ‘Indigo Motif’ was a little thicker than the rest. These are all shown with one coat over ‘Silver Canvas’.

It was just inevitable that a gradient was going to happen…

I wanted to see how the colours layered for a pond style manicure. ‘Pen & Pink’ is a really sweet pink that I thought would lend itself to this nicely. With a white pattern sandwiched between coats it worked really well. I’d prefer a little more transparency with each coat to get really detailed layering, but it still got the right effect and the slightly higher opacity meant that it didn’t take 500 coats to get the finished opacity.

Application

‘Silver Canvas’ is really nice to apply and one coat is sufficient if you’re putting colours over the whole nail. If you fancy wearing it alone, or with colour only in some places I’d suggest two coats. The only colour that I didn’t enjoy the application of was ‘Indigo Motif’ because it felt a little too thick. The rest though, were perfect! You have to be fairly quick with both the base and the colours – too much labouring over the silver coat leads to pulling, and a slow application of the colours can lead to areas of the nail looking more opaque.

Colours

I love the variety of colours, but what I love most is that they come to life over the Silver Canvas base! It’s like vintage enamelled jewellery. I friggin’ loved the gradient and was gutted to take it off for the next design so I’m going to have to recreate it on all ten nails soon. The layering possibilities, with or without the silver base, are endless. ‘Landscape Artist’ is hands down my favourite.

Overall

Thank you Coty for sending me these and restoring my faith in mainstream brands! I love these just as much as I hoped I would.

Have you tried these yet? What techniques have you used with this collection? I’m really excited to see the different ways that people are using these.
