Barry M Nail Art Pen Awesomeness

Barry M nail pens

I think the last time I used nail art pens I was 13, but they’ve been on my ‘I need these’ list for a while now so I’m pretty chuffed with these four beauties from Barry M, and oh my word, what have I been missing out on!

I’ve also never done a tribal mani. Yep, that’s right, so this is brand new ground for me! For this look I stuck with just the black and white pens, painting the design in white over a black base and then touching up and adding details with the black pen.

I swear I didn’t realise I was wearing a matching cardigan until I finished my nails but it seemed a good excuse to pose about a bit!

The polish in the pens isn’t like normal polish so it flows nicely. It didn’t seem to like my base polish much though, and it slid around on the surface of the base polish. It took a few back and forth strokes to get it to really take where I wanted it but this could be down to how glossy my base colour was and I’ll definitely be playing around with different base options, and the pink and silver too of course! All in all they’re really fun, and they don’t scratch the base colour like the biro type nail art pens because the’re more like a fine point pen. I’m not explaining that very well but suffice to say they’re not metal nibbed or scratchy!

I’m curious – how did you manage to do something so intricate on your off-hand (left hand if you are right-handed or vice versa)? I could probably do this on my left hand but no chance with my right – I have enough trouble applying my polish without making a mess on that hand. I love nail art but am more inclined to small things to stick on my nails as this looks like it needs a really steady hand ;o)

    • Polly

It is my left hand :) I’m right handed so that’s the best one but I was considering posting a picture of my other hand just to show the difference – I’m not particularly ambidextrous!

      • Nikki Hayes

Oh the nail art I could do if I was ambidextrous, lol, apparently breaking your dominant hand or arm is a good way to become it but I’d say that is a bit drastic ;o)

  • Alison B

That’s my problem too – the difference between one hand and the other. Plus I’m heavy handed and end up with bigger blob than I wanted. That doesn’t stop me trying though and I definitely try these because the colour choices are good with lots of other colours.

Polly did you use a top coat?

    • Polly

I love that you call me Polly! On top of the pen polish? yes, but I waited a fair while to ensure no smudging effect went on.

  • Alison B

LOL! I think I’ve been too impatient in the past and not waited long enough before applying top coat! :D

I’m such a nail art pen convert! Unforch, Barry M no longer ship to Aus (*sob*) but we get a similar brand here.

Love your tribal design, I’ve been wanting to give something like this a go for a while and you’ve inspired me with this amazingly detailed mani.
